Privacy Policy

The short version: MDReader does not collect, store, sell, or transmit any personal information. It doesn't have an account system, doesn't track usage, and doesn't read the contents of your documents anywhere but your own screen.

What MDReader does
MDReader is a Windows desktop application for opening, viewing, and printing Markdown
(.md, .markdown) and plain text (.txt) files. It runs
locally on your computer. Files you open in MDReader are read from your local disk and
rendered on your screen — they are never uploaded, copied, or transmitted anywhere.
Information we collect
MDReader does not collect any personal information. Specifically, MDReader does not:
- Require or use an account, sign-in, or user profile
- Collect analytics, usage statistics, or telemetry of any kind
- Read, transmit, or have any awareness of the content of the files you open
- Access your camera, microphone, location, or contacts
- Share, sell, or transmit any information to third parties
Network access
MDReader makes one kind of network request: on launch, it checks whether a newer version of the app is available, by requesting version information from our GitHub release infrastructure. This request does not include any information that identifies you or your device — it is the same request anyone's browser would make by visiting a public webpage. No file contents, filenames, or usage data are included in this request or sent anywhere else. You can decline any update the app notifies you about.
If you download MDReader from the Microsoft Store, the Store itself may collect standard installation and diagnostic data under Microsoft's own privacy policies; that collection is governed by Microsoft, not by MDReader, and is described in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
Local file system access
As a desktop application, MDReader needs standard file system access to open the files you choose to open (via the Open File dialog, drag-and-drop, double-click file association, or command-line launch) and to load its own settings and bundled assets (themes and fonts). This access is local to your device and is used solely to display your documents back to you. MDReader does not read files you have not explicitly opened, and does not scan your file system.
Data stored locally
MDReader stores a small amount of preference data locally on your device — for example, your chosen theme (light, dark, or an accessibility mode) and the app window's last size and position. This data stays on your device, is never transmitted anywhere, and contains no information that identifies you personally.
Children's privacy
MDReader does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children, because it does not collect personal information from any user.
Changes to this policy
If MDReader's functionality changes in a way that affects this policy — for example, if a future feature introduces optional network features — this page will be updated accordingly, and the "Last updated" date above will reflect the change.
